This Agreeable Tiger Moth (Spilosoma congrua) caterpillar was found crawling boldly across our driveway. It displays a yellow and black warning coloration which says “watch out” to potential predators. Its many spines have small barbs, which can be quite irritating if touched. In addition, the caterpillars of this and related tiger moths are toxic, because they contain poisonous compounds (histamines and cardiac glycosides) that are sequestered from the plants they eat.
