Young Woodpecker and Parent

I was watching this Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) as it made repeated trips to the bird feeder.

It would take a sunflower seed and fly away with it.

It turned out that there was someone waiting for the seed. This is an immature Red-Bellied Woodpecker.

When the parent landed, the immature would approach with its beak open.

The parent would then insert the sunflower seed into the open beak of the immature. Quite a sight of parental fidelity.
