Planting Birds

Bird Seed

Bird Seed

Sometime back, I was looking over the seeds offered at a local garden store. I saw carrot seeds, bean seeds of various types, corn seed and many others. Then I came upon some very interesting seed packets. Imagine my surprise when  they were advertised as “Wild Bird Seed”. I was very excited by this, because I am always wanting to have more wild birds around my house. We have grown many sorts of plants from seed, but I didn’t know one could actually plant seeds and grow birds.

So I diligently took a seed packet home and planted some in our woods. I was very anxious to see what would happen. At first nothing unusual seemed to be happening.

However, the resultant plants did appear to have some very large buds on them. Also, I was sure I could hear some chirping sounds coming from some of the buds.

So I carefully opened one of the buds. I was gratified to find that small birds were developing inside the bud, just the way I showed that leaves develop inside buds in a recent post!

I had to go out of town for  couple of weeks, so I could not follow subsequent development of the plants. However, when I returned,  this is what I saw. The birds are nearly mature now, and it won’t be long before they grow feet and are shed from the plant. We will have lots of new wild birds around then.
