Ducks in Trees

I saw two Wood Ducks (Aix sponsa) swimming in the lake behind our house. I grabbed my camera and tried to photograph them as they swam along. This is a difficult task because there are many trees between me and the lake. Then, obligingly, they flew into a tree outside our kitchen window. This is the first chance I have had to photograph Wood Ducks actually living up to their reputation for perching in trees.

Aren’t they beauties! Wood ducks are very popular with hunters They are the most commonly hunted duck, after Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos).

  1. Thank you…this is beautiful and I also enjoyed the picture of the turtles on their raft.

    • I had the camera set on burst mode, and I made about 20 shots. Since I wqs hand-holding the camera, many of them were out of focus. Lens used was a Canon 100-400 set on 400 mm. You know the old saying “If a blind man shoots up in the air enough times, he will eventually hit a duck”.
